PhD Scholarship in Biomedical Sciences

A PhD scholarship is available in biology at The University of Queensland. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Applications are invited up to April 14, 2015.

The successful appointee will develop new mouse models of asthma to explore the processes that underlie respiratory virus-induced exacerbations of disease. The project will focus on the role of airway epithelial cells, plasmacytoid dendritic cells and regulatory T cells. There are opportunities to work on clinical samples in collaboration with local clinical scientists.

Benefits
A $ 30,000 per annum scholarship, tax free for three years with a possible extension of 6 months in approved circumstances. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), or equivalent funding (see www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/scholarships-and-fees) in the first year of the degree.

There will be funded opportunities to visit and work with GlaxoSmithKline (UK), who are sponsoring the stipend, as well as to present at national and international conferences.

Application Requirements

- Applicants should possess a qualification in a relevant discipline of biomedical science, and have a strong interest in immunological processes. You should also have a strong desire to develop your personal research skills, while contributing to the team effort, including publication of results in high-impact journals.

- Strong academic performance demonstrated at a world-class Higher Education institute, and ability to work independently. Publication output in peer reviewed international journals is highly desirable, particularly for non-domiciled applicants. You will need to meet the PhD of the UQ Graduate School (www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/our-research-degrees), including UQ language criteria (www.uq.edu.au/grad-school/english-language-proficiency-requirements).
