PhD Scholarship at University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge is pleased to invite applicants to apply for PhD scholarship. The duration of this scholarship is 4 years. To be eligible, candidates must be British students. The deadline for applying is March 13, 2015.

Stratospheric water vapour is important in the chemistry-climate system through its role in stratospheric ozone chemistry and also through its effects on the radiative balance of the troposphere. Recent international assessments and model intercomparisons have shown simulation and future prediction of changes in stratospheric water vapour currently to be a significant uncertainty in many models used to predict future climate change and future ozone recovery.

Improving simulation of stratospheric water vapour remains a challenge for Earth System Models that are used for climate prediction. There are strong links between the water vapour distribution in the lower stratosphere and the tropopause temperatures which in turn determine water vapour, so positive feedbacks are possible that may significantly enhance the effects of modest errors in model representation of other relevant processes.

Duration
The funds for this post are available for 4 years in the first instance.

Application Requirements
- Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) an honours degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) in mathematics, physics or a similar discipline.
- Experience in atmospheric science or fluid mechanics and experience of programming would both be an advantage.

How to apply?
- Enquiries about this studentship project are very welcome and can be made to Professor Peter Haynes (phh1@cam.ac.uk). Some further details are available at http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/phh/research.html.
- Applications for this studentship, which provides full funding only for UK residents, should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae and the names of two academic referees, and be emailed to LE05496@maths.cam.ac.uk. If (s) he has not already done so the successful applicant will be required to apply formally to the University by the closing date for the course and meet the University's requirements for admissions: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/students/gradadmissions/prospec/apply/'.
