PhD in Biology at University of Copenhagen

Applicants are invited to apply for PhD fellowship in biology at University of Copenhagen. The duration of this scholarship is 3 years. To be eligible, candidates must hold Danish citizenship. Applicants should apply before February 27, 2015.

Horizontal transfer of plasmids encoding extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) is the main mechanism leading to resistance to cephalosporins, an important antimicrobial class for treatment of severe infections. The intestinal microbiota is a hot-spot for transfer of ESBL plasmids that humans may acquire from animals, for example via contaminated food. This risk is not negligible considering the widespread occurrence of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in food of animal origin, especially poultry meat.

In this project, the PhD fellow will evaluate the risk that ESBL-producing strains of animal origin may colonize the human intestinal tract and/or transfer ESBL plasmids to the indigenous microflora. In addition, the effects of antimicrobial treatment on horizontal transfer of ESBL plasmids will be explored to develop possible strategies for transfer inhibition.

Laboratory work will include bacterial mutagenesis (i.e. construction of fluorescently-marked plasmids) and mathematical modelling based on the experimental data generated by the project.

The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure. The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

The project has duration of 3 years.

The candidate should have.
- Relevant master's degree in biotechnology, biology or another related field.
- Submitted a master's thesis for assessment before the application deadline.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Qualification requirements: Special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below.
- Documented laboratory work within microbiology and molecular microbiology.
- Hands-on experience with methods and technologies used in the project.
- Good communication skills.
- Well-developed collaborative skills.
