Doctoral Position in Biomedicine

University of Southampton is seeking a highly motivated PhD student with an interest in medicine. All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Applicants should apply before March 20, 2015.

This project will characterize the 3D organisation of the airways and accompanying vasculature in health and disease. Using conventional lung biopsies imaged with a micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanner from Nikon Metrology UK at a resolution of better than 10 microns normal and diseased lung microstructures, such as airways and blood vessels can be identified and characterized in 3D.

The student will work in the Faculties of Medicine and Engineering at the University of Southampton, collaborating with Nikon Metrology UK to develop robust techniques for the analysis and identification of key features of the airways and their accompanying vasculature. Changes in these will be related to disease pathology in conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Application Requirements
The candidate has a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) with an interest in Biomedicine. Experience of biomedical imaging or computational modelling approaches would be advantageous but not essential.
