PhD Scholarship in Sensor systems for neuroprosthetics

University of Southampton is pleased to invite applicants to apply for PhD scholarship in environment. This position is open only for European students. Applications are invited up to April 15, 2015.

Upper and/or lower limb prosthetics are used to restore body functions to enable active and independent living. Neuroprosthetics is rapidly attracting significant interest worldwide as a key research frontier, in search for solutions which can mimic lost senses and interface with the nervous system. At the forefront of the scientific and technology challenge is the development of tactile sensor system which could mimic the sense of touch from natural skin.

Application Requirements
This project aims to develop tactile systems which can be potentially suitable for neuroprostheic application in e.g. upper limb prosthetics. This is an interdisciplinary engineering project across the engineering research fields of electrical, mechanical, device design and signal processing. The PhD student will work as part of the collaborative team with cross disciplinary expertise.

The PhD student will be supervised by academics with particular expertise in biomechanical assistive technologies in the field of rehabilitation. Applicants with backgrounds in electrical engineering or sensor systems or signal processing or mechanical engineering will be particularly suitable. Additional experience in biomedical devices would be advantageous but not essential.

How to apply?
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. Liudi Jiang, Engineering Materials Research group, Email (bellow), Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 8748.
