PhD Fellowship in Behavioural Neuroscience

University of Reading is pleased to invite applicants to apply for PhD scholarship in neuroscience. The funding is only available for European students. Applications are invited up to February 20, 2015.

Applications are invited from students interested in a PhD position within our vibrant research group in the Schools of Psychology and Pharmacy, University of Reading. Broadly, our group investigates the effects of phytocannabinoids (compounds from the Cannabis plant) in the CNS and associated pathophysiological states. During the last decade, we have successfully demonstrated that some phytocannabinoids exert significant anticonvulsant and antiepileptic effects in a number of preclinical models.

These findings have led to a number of clinical trials in people with epilepsy. The current PhD project will extend our epilepsy programme to assess the anticonvulsant and antiepileptic actions of phytocannabinoids in the treatment of febrile seizure and tuberous sclerosis, where seizures are a principle symptom. The successful applicant will develop and refine in vivo (rodent) models of febrile seizure and tuberous sclerosis, as well as employing behavioural, electrocorticography and immunohistochemical techniques to further assess the clinical potential of phytocannabinoids in these diseases.

This studentship is fully funded by a long standing industrial partner, GW Pharmaceuticals ( All costs including registration, bench fees, full stipend £ 13,726 p.a. and project running costs will be provided. This funding is provided for 3 years.

Application Requirements
- Applicants should hold or expect to gain a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelors Degree in a relevant subject. Applicants with a relevant Masters degree and/or specific research experience of relevance to the project (e.g. behavioural neuroscience, models of epilepsy) will be welcomed.
- Due to restrictions on the funding this studentship is only open to candidates from the UK/EU.
